Haiti Day 1

Monday

Left Dallas airport at 4am. Met up with the team in Miami. We are two teams but doing mostly everything together since ours is so small. We are about 15 plus 3 team leaders. Flew over the beautiful blue water. As we got closer we could see Haiti. All the tin roofs. I am actually here. This is a dream come true... 11 years ago when the Haiti earthquake happened, I wanted to go... and finally I am here. We touched down and taxi to the airport. The guy was like we don’t know what to tell you because we don’t know what’s going on but we can’t get to the gate. Apparently there hadn’t been some communication. After awhile I different plane left so we could pull up to the jet bridge. We get off the plane into a sweltering hot airport. We were welcomed by a band playing... singing.... drums.... so awesome. Got all our luggage and exited the airport. It actually wasn’t that simple at all but I’ll spare the details. Walked out and into HUMID air. We got to our tap tap and climbed in. Yes we were squished. Some sat on luggage when we ran out of seats but it still wasn’t full compared to Haiti standards. A short ride careening through the streets and we arrived. Very nice compound. Big guest house. We get the top floor and the other team gets the bottom floor. There are 4 rooms up here and an outdoor kitchen. We just use one room with bunk beds and one bathroom for us 6. A large patio runs the whole length of the house. You can look out across the city and see concrete houses covering the hills. Little kiddos playing and having fun in the yard beside. Lush green plants and trees and beautiful pink and white flowering bushes climbing the concrete walls. Geckos zipping everywhere. After hanging out for a bit we took a tour of the rest of the compound. 2 other small houses for long term missionaries and another guesthouse they are turning into a pizza restaurant. We all decided to go for a swim. Walked to a motel about a block away and climbed a few flights of stairs to a pool that was shaded with beautiful trees and flowers. Paid a few dollars to swim and drank passion fruit juice and ate fried plantain which was included with the swim. It was so refreshing after such humid heavy air. On the walk back we watched some boys play football (soccer) using tires propped with rocks for goals. They are so good at it. Had supper that the Haitian ladies made for us. It’s so hot that shredded cheese melts in the serving dish random fact of the day. Introductions...Devotions... and the plan for the next day. Went for a cold shower and slept so good.
